GOOGLE/APPLE: EXPOSURE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

A Purpose So Large it Brought These Two Together.

In 2020, Google and Apple joined forces to create the COVID Exposure Notification System (ENS), a shared platform that would allow contact tracing apps to leverage both Android and iOS devices to create the most accurate contact tracing experience possible. We were tasked with creating a toolkit that would help governments around the world building their own contact tracing apps explain how their apps utilized the ENS and what it was so people wouldn’t feel like this was the moment they were opting into 1984. Thinking first of what governments were trying to manage (the spread of COVID) meant creating a messaging hierarchy that actually de-emphasized the ENS and Google and Apple’s roles, and instead focusing on driving adoption and leading with the benefits of contact tracing. We preposed only digging into the ENS as a means helping people feel like they could understand how technology was supporting those efforts while also adding some familiar legitimacy from the Google and Apple brands.
